RUTGERS TOMATO SEEDS

 

A vintage open pollinated variety dating back to1920 when it was developed and improver upon by Rutgers University for Campbells Soup Co. in 1934.   The Rutgers tomato was developed by crossing Marglobe with JTD.  RUTGERS produces vibrant red, round tomato fruits on a strong disease resistant vine.  The average weight of RUTGERS tomatoes is about 1 pound per fruit.  It’s flavor, both for slicing for sandwiches and salads and cooking is still unequaled.  A perfect delicious fresh eating tomato or for home canning.

 

TOMATOES are high in vitamins and minerals.  Red tomatoes contain Lycopene that may help prevent prostate cancer  and other forms of cancer, heart disease,  and other serious diseases.

 

1956 Meyers Seed Co. catalog says about Rutgers Tomato...
"(73 days) This unusual tomato is from the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station.  It is globe shaped, quite large, with flesh firm, red and very solid.  Ripening begins at the center, insuring good color throughout."


 

HISTORY

 

Heirloom - A proven variety that excels at canning and slicing.
Produces an intense, red colored, round tomato fruits on a strong vine. A highly productive, open pollinated heirloom that has been around since 1934. Rutger tomatoes were originally developed by a Rutgers University scientist named Lyman G. Schermerhorn in co-operation with the Campbell's Soup Company. The Rutgers Tomato was developed by crossing Marglobe with a variety called JTD. As time went on, Rutgers became the most famous tomato worldwide and once made up over 70% of the tomatoes being processed in the United States.
